ALFONSO A FINALIST FOR FLORIDA’S PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR

March 2019

David Alfonso, the principal of Palm Beach Lakes Community High School, has been selected by the Florida Department of Education as one of five finalists for the 2019 Principal of the Year for the State of Florida. Alfonso became eligible for the state’s prize after being named the School District’s Principal of the Year in January.

Alfonso took the helm at Palm Beach Lakes two years ago touting his career-long mantra “Make Success Unavoidable”. Under Alfonso’s leadership, the school has seen a complete transformation in culture and academics, including significant learning gains in each subject, and a graduation rate expected to reach 90 percent by the end of this school year.

Because he believes that “relationships with students are key to keeping peace at Lakes,” Alfonso greets each student daily with a handshake and says he knows every student - nearly 2,500 of them - by name.

By implementing clear expectations and goals, reaffirming the excellence of the school and every student’s ability to learn, students are taking ownership of their success in addition to exhibiting pride in themselves and the school.

Alfonso is the second District principal in three years to be named a finalist for the State of Florida’s award. Dr. Anthony Lockhart, then principal of Lake Shore Middle School, was named a finalist and ultimately won the top prize in 2017.
