Barnes & Noble Helps Foster a Love of Reading in Palm Beach County Children January 24, 2018

January 2018

Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is underway in Palm Beach County, and local Barnes & Noble stores are doing their part to ensure students have access to new books that will help them grow as readers.

More than 6,200 students will receive free books this week, thanks to proceeds from the book drive that took place in Barnes & Noble stores during the holiday season.

School Board Member Erica Whitfield assists Principal Janyn Robinson and Barnes & Noble staff with delivering books to students at Lantana Elementary School.“At Barnes & Noble, it’s all about putting a book in everyone’s hands, especially students,” said Ashton Parfitt, Community Business Development Manager for Barnes & Noble. “Being partners with the School District really gives us the opportunity to collect thousands of books and deliver them to schools all over the District.”

Encouraging healthy reading habits in young children is key to their future academic success, as studies have shown that students who struggle with reading in third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school than their peers.  One of the goals of the District’s Strategic Plan is to increase the number of Palm Beach County students reading on grade level by 3rd grade, an objective that is dependent on students being able to develop a genuine love of reading.

Lantana Elementary School students were excited to dive into their new books with School Board Member Erica Whitfield, who shared their enthusiasm for the new titles.

“It was so wonderful. I loved the opportunity to really interact with the students,” Ms. Whitfield shared.  “We talked a lot about the different types of books that we found, and some of my favorites that I was able to share with them. At this young age, we just want that joy to be able to be part of their reading process, and I think that Barnes & Noble helping us today really helps us to be able to accomplish that.”
