Latinos in Action Program Fosters Community Engagement, College Readiness at John I. Leonard High School
It may seem easy to get lost in the crowd during high school, but one program at John I. Leonard High School is changing the game for students.
The school’s Latinos in Action program, part of a national organization designed to empower Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities through service, professionalism and leadership, has allowed students to embrace their bilingualism and multiculturalism while preparing for postgraduate success.
In class, students listen to presentations from community organizations, organize fundraisers for scholarships, work on college essays and plan service projects that allow them to give back to the community. Aside from the life skills they’re developing and lessons they’re learning, it’s the overall group experience and camaraderie with each other that has students excited about Latinos in Action.
“We are a family,” says Luis Mora, a junior at the school. “We do everything together. We work together (and) we cooperate together.”
