STUDENT COMMERCIAL BRINGS HOME SILVER ADDY
A television commercial project produced and created in the Cinema Arts program at Palm Beach Atlantic University has won a silver ADDY Award.
The big win in the student category of the ADDY Awards -- a prestigious industry honor that recognizes excellence in advertising -- was announced recently at the 2018 American Advertising Federation’s Greater Fort Lauderdale & The Palm Beaches gala in Fort Lauderdale.
The 30-second spec or non-commissioned commercial on the Subculture Coffee shop in downtown West Palm Beach was produced by film production student Cassidy Bulthuis and directed by Antonio Zarro, associate professor of Cinema Arts and assistant dean.
Bulthuis is pursuing a bachelor's degree in film, cinema and video studies. Professor Zarro has won several awards (Academy Award, Telly, Cine Golden Eagle, Aurora to name a few) during his extensive industry experience as a screenwriter, director and actor. His productions have appeared on major cinematic stages in Hollywood, Cannes and Europe and have been shown on Showtime, HBO, Cinemax and the Family Channel. PBA alumna Sam Raulli, who graduated recently with a bachelor’s degree in film production, did the commercial’s cinematography.
The “Subculture” commercial was among 24 silver ADDY accolades awarded out of a field of 48 student entries overall, according to the AAF Greater Fort Lauderdale & The Palm Beaches, a local arm of the American Advertising Federation based in Washington, D.C. Ten student entries won a gold ADDY.
The winning commercial was a class project produced through the Cinema Arts Program’s Production Lab where students are given opportunities to develop real-life skills in producing, directing, cinematography, editing and sound. The short film featured actors from South Florida and the theatre, Zarro said.
In learning of the latest honor for the university’s award-winning Cinema Arts Program, School of Communication & Media Dean J. Duane Meeks called the silver ADDY “another important win from faculty-student collaboration.”
